Tether Unlocks Gold Liquidity with Bullion-Backed Loans
Tether, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin, USDT, is significantly broadening the utility of its substantial gold reserves through a new partnership with crypto lender Ledn. This strategic move will see the company offering gold-backed loans, allowing holders of its tokenised gold product, Tether Gold (XAUT), to borrow against their bullion without having to sell the underlying asset. This innovative approach mirrors Ledn's well-established bitcoin-backed lending model, providing greater financial flexibility to XAUT holders.

The stablecoin giant boasts an impressive $23 billion in physical gold reserves, making it one of the largest private holders globally. Each XAUT token is backed 1:1 by one troy ounce of gold securely stored in Swiss vaults. By enabling gold-backed loans, Tether is effectively monetising these reserves, transforming them into a more dynamic and accessible asset for its users.

Traditionally, gold-backed lending has been the preserve of central banks, major financial institutions, and bullion dealers. However, Tether and Ledn are disrupting this landscape by leveraging tokenisation. They argue that by converting physical gold into a digital token, it can function much like bitcoin as digital collateral, thereby unlocking liquidity for investors.

Ledn has confirmed that it is adding support for XAUT, alongside bitcoin (BTC) and Tether's stablecoin USDT. The gold-backed borrowing option is expected to become available later this year. Ledn emphasised that client collateral will continue to be held on a 1:1 basis, without being lent out or used to generate yield. This reassures users, drawing a clear distinction between its services and those of past rivals who collapsed during the crypto winter of 2022.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, commented on the development, stating, "As digital assets become an increasingly important part of the global economy, demand is growing for solutions that combine long-term ownership with financial flexibility." This initiative underscores Tether's ongoing efforts to expand beyond its core stablecoin business, utilising the profits generated by USDT to diversify into a broader technology and infrastructure group encompassing finance, energy, and AI.

A significant part of this diversification strategy has been building a robust gold business. Beyond the growth of XAUT, Tether has accumulated approximately 140 metric tons of physical bullion, solidifying its position as one of the world's largest corporate gold holders. The company has also made strategic investments in the precious metals marketplace Gold.com and forged a partnership with crypto financing firm Antalpha to further expand XAUT's reach in lending and physical redemption. This latest move with Ledn is a testament to Tether’s commitment to enhancing the utility and accessibility of its substantial gold reserves in the evolving digital asset landscape.
