Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum, recently published a revised iteration of the "Lean Ethereum" strawmap. This extensive long-term vision, initially unveiled in February, aims to comprehensively overhaul nearly every fundamental aspect of the blockchain. His updated proposal outlines far-reaching modifications designed to render Ethereum faster, more cost-effective to operate, inherently more private, and fortified against future threats, including the rise of quantum computing. Although the full realisation of this roadmap remains years away, initial reactions strongly indicate that many of Ethereum's key developers align with its strategic direction.
Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder of StarkWare, offered a nuanced assessment of the roadmap, describing it as containing "many good things, a few unclear things, still a few problems." He particularly commended Ethereum's strategic decision to place recursive STARKs – a cryptographic technique designed to substantially simplify network verification – at the core of its future development. Ben-Sasson highlighted this as a pivotal departure from earlier periods when a considerable segment of the Ethereum community harboured scepticism towards the technology.
Furthermore, Ben-Sasson welcomed Buterin's decision to elevate privacy and quantum-resistant cryptography to top-tier priorities. He explicitly stated on X (formerly Twitter), "Quantum safety—excellent. Glad to see this as a high priority." However, he voiced strong reservations about the proposed timeframe, arguing that Ethereum should not wait three to four years to achieve these milestones. "'3-4 years' as the timeline is way too long," Ben-Sasson asserted, especially emphasizing the urgency for "quantum readiness."
Dankrad Feist, a former researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, echoed similar sentiments. While acknowledging the roadmap's vision as "really cool," Feist noted on X that features such as near-instant transaction finality and dramatically increased throughput have the potential to revolutionise the network. However, his primary concern also centred on the pace of implementation, fearing a slow rollout could hinder Ethereum's competitive edge and preparedness for emerging technological challenges.
