The new licence is a critical component of Coinbase's ambitious "Everything Exchange" strategy, which aims to diversify its product suite to include a comprehensive range of financial instruments. This strategic expansion into traditional assets like stocks and derivatives complements its well-established crypto services, marking a pivotal moment for the company in one of its most important international markets. This authorisation bolsters Coinbase's existing UK e-money licence and its FCA crypto asset registration, which was obtained last year, allowing it to provide both crypto and fiat services within the country.
UK users are now set to benefit from access to products that Coinbase has progressively been rolling out in other regions. For instance, US customers already enjoy the ability to trade stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), while eligible non-US users can trade USDC-settled stock perpetual futures on prominent large-cap companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Tesla. Coinbase has also expressed intentions to introduce tokenised stocks, which will be backed one-for-one by US equities, to eligible non-US users, designed to provide investors with direct ownership of underlying shares and associated dividends.
This latest UK approval marks a substantial step forward in Coinbase's vision to become an “Everything Exchange,” encompassing stocks, crypto derivatives, a variety of tokenised products, prediction markets, and various consumer finance offerings. The timing of this regulatory clearance is particularly significant as it provides Coinbase with a regulated pathway to broaden its services beyond pure crypto ahead of the UK's full crypto framework, which is anticipated to be implemented in October 2027. This proactive approach ensures Coinbase remains at the forefront of the evolving financial landscape.
