A rare positive signal emerged from volatility indexes; the Blockchain Volatility Index (BVIV) dropped to 47%. This fall from its two-week climb suggests that traders are anticipating calmer market conditions. However, a closer look at derivatives data across the top 25 cryptocurrencies reveals that bearish sentiment largely remains in control of price movements.
Trader caution is evident as Bitcoin and Ether futures open interest have reverted to early-month levels. This retreat reflects a broader reluctance among investors to take on additional risk. Meanwhile, the positioning in Solana and Avalanche (AVAX) raises questions regarding the sustainability of their recent price recoveries.
The altcoin market is currently in a holding pattern, with the CoinMarketCap Altcoin Season index stuck at 49/100. Investors are keenly awaiting a definitive directional move from Bitcoin, which remains the leading indicator for the broader crypto market. The crypto sector now faces the final stretch of the month in a precarious position, with Bitcoin still below £47,000 and Ether valued at less than £1,250 ($1,600).
Since October's record high, Bitcoin's price has plummeted by over 50%, with many analysts predicting further declines in the coming months. Monday saw the largest cryptocurrency nudge into positive territory, rising 0.6% from midnight UTC to £46,846 ($59,800). This modest gain occurred despite the overall market structure and chart patterns leaning bearishly.
Solana has shown signs of recovery, advancing more than 13% since Thursday and 2% since midnight, after experiencing its lowest point since late 2023 earlier in the month. Concurrently, US equities saw an overnight rise, with Nasdaq 100 futures up 1% and S&P 500 futures gaining 0.75%. Both indexes, however, remain in a downtrend since their June 15 record highs.
Over the past 24 hours, more than £157 million ($200 million) in futures positions were liquidated by exchanges, with long positions accounting for the majority. A potential turnaround has been observed in the last four hours, with nearly £15.7 million ($20 million) in liquidations, including £10.2 million ($13 million) in short positions. This suggests that Bitcoin's rebound towards £47,000 ($60,000) caught some bears off guard.
Bitcoin's futures market offers little excitement, with open interest (OI) returning to early-month ranges, effectively erasing Friday's minor surge to 775,000 BTC. This indicates a continued hesitance among traders to assume additional risk, a sentiment echoed in the Ether market, where OI remains stable at approximately 14.2 million ETH.
Conversely, open interest in Solana appears relatively elevated at 72.70 million SOL, nearing its record high of over 76 million SOL set on June 24. This elevated OI suggests the potential for increased volatility in Solana's native token. Avalanche (AVAX) also experienced a gain of over 5% last week, decoupling from Bitcoin's broader weakness, though this has not yet enticed traders into leveraged bets.
