Bitcoin Investors Bearish Amidst August Price Concerns
The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a significant shift in sentiment as July draws to a close, with Bitcoin investors adopting a more bearish outlook for August. This change is particularly evident in the options market, where the $60,000 Bitcoin (BTC) put option has emerged as the most popular bet on Deribit, the world's largest crypto options exchange.

Puts are financial instruments used by traders to hedge against potential price drops. The current notional open interest for this specific put option stands at a staggering $1.17 billion, indicating a strong desire among investors to protect their Bitcoin holdings from a downward trend.

This shift is noteworthy, considering that bullish call options at strike prices of $70,000 and $72,000 were previously dominant. These calls, which are bets on price increases, each boasted a notional open interest of around $2.5 billion just days ago. Their popularity was fuelled by anticipation surrounding Wednesday's US Federal Reserve meeting, with some traders expecting Bitcoin to surge to $72,000 following the interest rate decision.

However, these bullish predictions did not materialise, leading to the probable closure of many of these bets during Friday's options expiry. This event saw the settlement of BTC and Ethereum (ETH) options valued at an estimated $10 billion. Consequently, the notional open interest for the $70,000 call has plummeted to $943 million, and for the $72,000 call, it has fallen to $888 million.

While these figures remain substantial, they are now significantly overshadowed by the $60,000 put option, signalling a clear change in market sentiment from bullish to bearish. This shift is further reinforced by historical data and seasonal patterns.

Looking at Bitcoin's performance since 2013, July has typically yielded a median return of 8.61%. This month has largely followed that trend, with an 8.9% price increase. However, a positive July often precedes a negative August, which has historically shown a median return of -7.51%.

The use of the median as a statistical measure is crucial here, as it provides a more accurate representation of typical outcomes by mitigating the impact of extreme gains or losses that can skew average figures. In volatile markets like cryptocurrency, the median often offers a clearer insight into prevailing trends.

Therefore, with this historical context and the prevailing options market activity, the mood for Bitcoin is decidedly bearish as we approach August. Investors are advised to remain vigilant and monitor market developments closely.
